Over the past couple years, CBD has taken over the wellness industries with various products from edibles and drops to oils, ointments and beyond. Now, let’s welcome a new cannabis-derived compound that is soon to become just as popular. This new product is beneficial in its own ability to help with a good night’s sleep and help regulate the immune system. Welcome, Cannabinol (CBN).  CBN is a cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant that can be used effectively as a sleep aid or sedative. ” CBN and CBD are both cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, but they have different chemical structures” explains Dr. Elizabeth Ardillio, Direction of Medical Education at Green Thumb Industries.  CBN is the result of when THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is heated and exposed to oxygen (co2).

Similar to using CBD products, CBN has benefits that include improved sleep quality, pain relief, seizures and anti-inflammation caused by several conditions including arthritis and Chron’s disease. After consuming CBN, the average consumer can expect to feel the effects within 30-180 minutes. It is important to remember to not take another dose of CBN because you are not feeling any effects. Understanding how these products work is important to remain healthy and safe. CBN does have mild psychoactive effects unlike CBD products, but it will not feel like a high you would receive from THC products. Dr. Elizabeth Ardillio says ” If you’ve never consumed cannabis before or it’s been a while, you are more likely to feel a sense of euphoria”. She recommends if you are new to the world of cannabis that new consumers start with no more than 2.5 milligrams of THC per dose of CBN. Once you become comfortable and begin to build a tolerance, you can increase the amount of THC.

Currently, CBN products are being treated more like marijuana than CBD. This means that you can only purchase CBN products in states where recreational marijuana use is legal or where a licensed medical professional can provide you with a prescription. CBN is only available through regulated dispensaries.
