Dronabinol, pronouced  “droe nab’ i nol” is a man-made form of THC. Dronabinol is strictly used for reasons such as nausea and vomitting caused by chemotherapy when other medications aren’t helping said symptoms. It is also used to treat loss of appetite and weight loss for those with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

It is extremely important to take dronabinol as directed by your doctor and with a full glass of water. Dronabinol is available in two forms. One as a capsule and two as a solution (liquid) to be taken orally. When being used to treat the nausea and vomitting caused by chemotherapy, it will be taken 1-3 hours before treatment and again every 2-4 hours after treatment. It is best to have that first dose on an empty stomach and the following doses can be taken with food. When dronabinol is being used to increase apetite, it is usually taken twice a day, about an hour before lunch or dinner. It is likely that a doctor will prescribe a low dose to begin and gradually increase over time. Dronabinol will only control your symptoms as you are taking the medication. Do not stop taking the medication without consulting with your doctor. By doing so, you may experience withdrawl symptoms such as irritability, sleep issues, hot flashes, runny nose, diarrhea and more (Medline Plus).

As with most medications, there is the potential risk of side effects. Side effects may consist of nausea, vomitting, stomach pain, sleepiness, dizziness, troubles concentrating, anxiety/depression, memory loss, headaches, vision problems, hallucinations, seizures, increased heartbeat, etc. If you experience any of these symptoms and they are severe or do not go away, contact your doctor immediatley ( Medline Plus).
